When I began my health journey almost 40 years ago, I did what many are currently doing ~ looking at the dis-ease and then "trying" to fix it with what I call a "band-aid."
They read or hear somewhere that this vitamin/mineral or this product or this essential oil or herb will relieve their symptoms or, help them drop the extra weight. Well, they MAY yet, they're only temporary solutions if they "work" at all. Question is, how long you going to use those things and what happens when you stop?
For instance, a close friend has a skin condition which, when he drank coconut water, went away! Problem is, as coconuts became more expensive, he stopped drinking it. Skin condition returned. Why? The root cause had not been addressed.
For me, after being married for almost 10 years, and gaining an extra 40 pounds, I "tried" all the most popular "solutions" including cinnamon, coconut oil; walking 10,000 steps a day (I actually began walking 10 miles a day); eating one "healthy" meal and then eating LOTS of popcorn with cinnamon and coconut oil (popcorn has few calories and I was basically starving myself). That not only did not assist me in dropping excess weight, I GAINED more! When I upgraded my food program and began eating MORE, the weight easily dropped off.
What it comes down to is WHAT we eat! When on a healthy, plant-based, whole foods program, you can eat as much as you want; drop excessive fat and gain health. No calorie counting (whole foods tend to contain little to no calories, especially vegetables); no checking numbers, no tricks and tips. Just eat food!
As a health practitioner and educator people keep accosting me (yes, that's my word) with all kinds of MLM (Multi-level marketing) products! They think they'll add to my practice. Yes, they'll add a loss of integrity. I teach people to eat food! Not junk! Not products! Food!
Now, what does that mean?
We "think" of everything we put in our mouths, no matter where it comes from ~ bottles, packages, cans, etc., ~ as food, yet, most of those things are processed food products devoid of most nutrients. Food contains not only macro nutrients ~ protein, carbohydrates, fats ~ yet micronutrients and phytonutrients, some of which haven't even been found yet and certainly lost during the processing and packaging processes!
People often say how the land our produce is grown on is depeleted therefore the produce doesn't contain the nutrients it "used" to contain. That MAY be so yet, those food products contain even fewer nutrients. Those isolated nutrients listed on packages could be gotten way easier, are more assimilable AND intact and combined with the micro/phyto nutrients nature put there for our consumption and health just by eating the food they came from.
What I and my clients have found is, upgrade your food program and your health also upgrades while excess weight declines.
Is it simple? Yes! Easy? Well, not if we listen to our heads and other people. Our heads (and other people) come from fear! When I first became a vegetarian, I was told I wouldn't live a year. Well, I'm still here and in the best shape ever!
So, how to do it: Eat more greens! WAYYYY more greens! A side-salad once-a-day is not even minimal. I'm talking about a pound a day of greens! How to do this? Smoothies, for one! You can easily add a couple of handfuls (to begin) into a fruit smoothie. The fruit hides the taste. As you become more adventurous, add more!
Then, more greens, steamed, water-fried or raw for your next two meals! Eat a LOT! The more you eat, the more you'll drop excess weight, the healthier you'll become because you'll be obtaining the nutrients ~ micro and phyto ~ which you've not been receiving previously.
Greens may include all the leafies ~ Romaine, spinach, chard, kale, bok choy, water cress, dandelion, etc. Remember also, broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, etc.
Color-filled vegetables including bell peppers, cucumbers, jicama, red cabbage, green cabbage, and whatever else you enjoy!
Fruit! LOTS of fresh and even frozen fruit!
Beans and lentils ~ Do you know that beans are nutritionally more beneficial than grains and GREAT for diabetics?
Mushrooms! Yes, many tell me they LOVE mushrooms and, others, like myself ~ it's certainly an acquired taste. But, so what? Mushrooms enhance immune system function and assist in preventing various cancers. Remember, mushrooms should be slightly cooked to eliminate the carcinogin factor.
Seeds and nuts! Yes, I also know many are allergic to nuts so, go for the seeds! Doesn't need to be many yet, they are full of nutrients so about 1 oz. a day of raw seeds and nuts will enhance your health tremendously. Remember to add in chia, flax and hemp!
A few books I recommend which helped me be free of allergies ~ animal/food/environmental; eliminate asthma; stop heart irregularities including tachycardia and angina ~ and other stuff. I have NO joint pain and take no meds. I turn 66 Feb., 2015.
Eat to Live This is the very first book I got because I thought it was just for eliminating weight! Boy, was I wrong! W/in weeks, I HAD easily dropped excess weight (with no starvation or deprivation) yet, I was also able to sleep through the night; the heart issues stopped AND, I was able to go to a concert at a ranch, sit on a hay bale and be around horses!!!! Wow! If I'd only known earlier!
End of Diabetes I'm not even close to having diabetes yet, many of the people I work with do so I got this and am reading it for understanding. I KNOW the EtL program is all they need yet, this really explains more about what diabetes is, why people have it, what insulin does to us, etc. It's mostly for D-2 yet, people with D-1 have found, following the program, they are able to lower their insulin dosage.
Disease Proof Your Child ~ We have no children yet, I purchased this to give to a client who does. Well, I still have it. Found it fascinating. I'll be re-reading this one again soon.
Dr. Fuhrman has a few other books and videos. I recommend them all. I've read almost all except his latest ~
End of Dieting ~ which I just received yesterday.
People may say that all you need do is read Eat to Live ~ it's all there. This is true yet what I've found for me is, in order to learn at deeper levels, it helps to hear things more than once and in different contexts.
For all the benefits I've seen so far on his program, I want to learn more about the "why"! I've got the "what" and the "how" yet, not yet the "why."
